DETROIT -- The men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2011 New Balance Vic Matthews Open this Saturday, Oct. 15.  The women's 5k race begins at 11:30 a.m., while the men's 8k race will follow at 12:15 p.m.

The meet will be hosted by the University of Guelph.  The Canadian Cross Country Championship course is located on campus in the University of Guelph Arboretum.  The challenging course is made up of grass, mulch and gravel.

Detroit did not compete in the Vic Matthews Open last season.  The 2010 version of the open featured teams from the University of Guelph, University of Windsor, University of Toronto, Queen's University, University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, South Simcoe Dufferin, Humber College, York University, Trent University and Ryerson University. Guelph took first in the open, scoring 28 points and placing three runners in the top four positions.

The event honors Vic Matthews, a long-time coach of the Gryphon cross country team.  Matthews coached four CIS champions, 10 conference champions, and was a leader in establishing Canadian collegiate distance running for women.  A member of the Gryphon Hall of Fame, Matthews passed away in 2004.
