Lansing Catholic junior Keenan Rebera learned something from a disappointing fifth-place finish at the Division 3 state meet a year ago that proved invaluable in helping him capture an individual state title last month. “I was sick, but I pushed through really hard,” he said. “I actually was running the majority of the race by myself. It was the hardest I had pushed myself, and it showed me I had an extra gear. It showed me I had what it took.”

Juniors Meg Darmofal of Mason and Karrigan Smith of St. Johns finished 1-2 at the Greater Lansing Cross Country Championships in mid-October for a second time in three years. Then Smith ran a career-best 5K time of 18:04 while taking third in the Division 2 state meet last month at Michigan International Speedway. One place behind her in fourth was Darmofal, who had run a career-best 18:03 at the Portage Invitational a month earlier.
