Few people should be surprised by either of these teams being ranked first overall. The East Kentwood men, led by head coach Dave Emeott, were state champions last season and have won four of the past five, as well as finishing runner-up in 2007 and 2008. The Saline women finished runner-up to three-time state champion Grosse Pointe South last season to finish higher than they ever had before.

Runner-up from last season, Grand Blanc, found themselves back in the number two spot to start the season followed by three surprise teams: Saline, Novi, and Traverse City Central.

East Kentwood (118.75) is led by a pair of very good hurdlers in Antoine Lloyd and Devin McKinney. Lloyd ranks high in the 110 Hurdles (3rd), 300 Hurdles (2nd), High Jump (3rd) while McKinney ranks high in the 200 Dash (13th) and 110 Hurdles (2nd). Grand Blanc (92.50) scores points with Grant Fisher being first in the 1600 and 3200 while his teammate, Drake Gauthier ranks first in the 400 and third in the 800.

The Saline men (88.25) get their points in almost every event with the exception of the 100, 110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles, and 1600. Junior Logan Wetzel only ran in three meets last season after coming back from an injury suffered one year before and should add points in both the 800 and the 1600 this season. Novi (87.00) is carried by a pair of tremendous athletes; Boston University commit, Jordan Love, and senior Ali Taha. Love just came off a great indoor season and ranks second in the 100 and third in the 200. Taha is also ranked high in the 200 (5th) and leads Division 1 in the long jump after last season. Traverse City Central (69.75) rounds-out the Men's Top Five led by distance standouts Anthony Berry and Kyle Dotterrer as well as Aaron Taylor in the 110 Hurdles, High Jump, and Long Jump.

Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills (49.00) was Division 2 last season, and still find themselves ranked 11th behind junior sprinter, Sam Beal.

The Coursairs of Waterford Mott (37.50) have lots of distance pieces between Brennan Munley who ranks 20th in the 400 and 5th in the 800 along with Tommy Osika (1600) and Ryan Robinson (1600 and 3200). Sticking on the ship-theme, the Dreadnaughts of Dexter (30.00) rank 20th as a team from Pole Vaulters only; Noah Gary (first), Casey Hanson (sixth), and Andrew Dumont (tenth).

The Lady-Hornets from Saline (152.75) are the clear leaders at this point especially considering recent transfer, Kennedy Beazleyhas points still being counted for Ann Arbor Huron. The Oak Park women (105.00) finished sixth at last year's Division 1 State Championship and were just a technicality away from a win in the 4x400 to give them ten more team points and an outright fifth place finish. After the tremendous indoor season they had they will likely see their points jump once their freshman, Carlita Taylor, runs some outdoor races. East Kentwood (84.75) ranks third behind stud-sophomore Sekayi Bracey. Jenison (70.00) and Northville (68.75) round-out the Pre-Season Top 5.

University of Michigan commit, Ellie Leonard, leads Jenison by scoring in the 800 (9th), 1600 (2nd), and 3200 (3rd). Hurdler McKenna Mattson also scores in the 100 Hurdles (3rd) and 300 Hurdles (8th). Another U of M commit, Rachel Coleman, leads Northville along with Alison Robinson, Erin Zimmer, and Taleen Shahrigian fresh off a cross country state title. The Mustangs are also led by a pair of hurdlers in Lauren Rodriguez and Morgan Robertson.

Numbers six and seven in the Women's Team Rankings are teams to watch for the 2014 season. Ann Arbor Skyline became a contender in head coach Rolando Eccleston's first season and look to improve on that. It is still impressive to see Grosse Pointe South ranked so highly after graduating two of the best distance runners in Michigan history. Ersula Farrow is ranked in the top four in the 400 (fourth), 800 (first), and 1600 (first) to pick-up right where the last class left-off.
