The sole underclassmen to advance to San Diego from the Midwest region is Madison Troy of Grandville, Mich., who placed sixth overall in 17:31.5. The sophomore's hot streak started in early November in winning the Michigan State Championship with the fastest time across all classifications (17:28.2). She followed that up with a stunning post-season run; not only did she advance to San Diego, but she placed fourth at NXN Midwest and then earned All-American honors with a 12th-place, 17:24.2 finish at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore.
While Troy is a dark horse to figure into the San Diego top spots, several other underclassmen earned all-region honors and may accompany her next year to nationals. Also earning all-region spots were Jessi Larson (14th, 17:57.9), Lauren Peterson (19th, 18:16.4), Emily Covert (22nd, 18:19.5) and Jocelyn Long (24th, 18:27.2).
