Cameron Cooper, a senior at Oak Park High School, won his first New Balance Nationals title with a 1:49.46 personal best performance on Sunday in the championship 800 meter race. Brandon McGorty from Virginia took the field out fast thru the first 400 before Cooper was able to seize the lead from the US leader in the 1000 at the bell. Cooper's performance broke the meet record and only .25 of a second off the national record by Robby Andrews.
Cooper was doubling back from anchoring the Motor City Track Club boys to a national title in the sprint medley relay on Saturday night with a 1:50.29 anchor leg split as the squad comprised of all athletes from Oak Park High School won going away by a 5 second margin in 3:25.31 to move up to US #4 on the all-time list.
The group capped off their weekend with a 4th place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a Michigan #3 all-time performance of 3:19.16. Cooper anchored with a 48.73 split.
