Training Blog: Lexa Barrott kicks off her season !

Week 3 - 8/24 through 8/30

Monday: Today was my first run back in Northville in over a week. Practice is in the afternoon now so it's usually a bit hotter too. Today we did a 6 mile tempo run. I did the first three miles with my teammates and the last three by myself. I did this run at about 6:35 pace. I felt pretty good after taking the day off yesterday. Total mileage for the day was 7.5.

Tuesday: Our team was back in the pool today. A few of my teammates and I swam in the morning for about an hour and we swam 100 laps. In the afternoon at practice we had another hard day. We did 4xMile repeats on our home course, which is very hilly. I did all mine between 5:45-6:05. The last two were extremely hard for me because my legs we tired from the hard run yesterday and swimming in the morning. I was still happy with my times as it was the first proper interval workout of the season. The total mileage on the day was 7 miles.

Wednesday: This morning I swam again for an hour completing about 100 laps. I think the swim workouts are starting to make a difference in my aerobic capacity. At practice today my teammates and I were able to recover after a few tough days. We did a 6 mile recovery run at 8:00 pace. After we finished we did a few strides to finish. I did an ab workout when I got home. Total milage was 7.5 miles.

Thursday: We have our first race tomorrow so today at practice we did our standard pre-race workout. We ran three miles at 7:20 pace and then came back and did 4x400 buildups to get the speed in our legs going again. I felt really fresh today so I'm excited to race tomorrow and see where I am at right now. Total mileage today was 5.5 miles. Let the racing season begin!

Friday: Today we had our first race of the season. We ran at Hudson Mills in the Ann Arbor Running Co. End of summer classic. It turned out to be a pretty hot day with temperatures at about 80 during the race. I finished with a time of 18:29 which is kind of where I expected to be. It's a very long season from here with lots of time to get better! After the race we had a team picnic at the course which was fun because there was a lot of food and I love food (and I got to hang out with my teammates)

Saturday: I took today completely off because in the morning I went on a campus tour at the University of Michigan and I had to work tonight so I was pretty busy. I did do a little bit of stretching because my legs were kind of sore from the race yesterday. They felt better after.

Sunday: This morning I got up and went to the high school to swim for about an hour an a half. We had 14 people there between the boys and the girls team which made swimming a lot more fun. We often split up into two person teams and do relays in the pool when we have a lot of people like we did today. They can get pretty competitive. I swam two miles worth of laps. After swimming, I did a distance recovery run around Northville and some trails at the state park nearby. I ran with an old teammate and we ran 7.5 miles at about 7:40 pace. This run got all the remaining soreness out of my legs which is good because we have another race Tuesday!
