US#1 Julie Macedo and US#8 Haley Pierce battled each other relentlessly in Delaware this past weekend, with Haley collapsing and Julie finishing 2nd after staggering close to the finish.  US#4 Grace Tinkey is back and won a state title with the only sub-18 time on the day.  US#6 Erin Finn won her state title in MI and looks poised for a great championship season ahead.  US#7 Katie Knight blasted a 17:10 5k in WA to win a state title and run the fastest time in the state by far.  Full updates on each athletes recent accomplishments are below.  Be sure to click on each athletes name to see times, articles, photos and interviews of each athlete if available.  

This first episode covers core training techniques. These workouts will apply to you whether you are already on an elite level or just the beginning. For beginners they may serve as an intense workout to build your core muscles. If you're already in shape they are crucial for you to maintain and sharpen that core strength and to prevent injury by helping you stabilize your movement.

BOSTON, MA, December 8, 2010 – Global athletic leader New Balance is pleased to announce an official multi-year partnership with the National Scholastic Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York City in the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The event will bring together the best indoor track and field high school athletes from across the country for a weekend of intense competition.  

October starts with a bang in Ohio this weekend as the 5th running of the Midwest Meet of Champions takes place in Hilliard, Ohio. Zach Wills (Mason, OH) will look to make this a three-peat on the boys' side, while Emma Brink (Sacred Heart, KY) and Waverly Neer (Culver Academies, IN) headline the girls' race.

West Catholic’s Zeke Timmer and Grand Rapids Christian’s Julia Bos were not flustered when they didn’t take early leads in their respective races at Saturday morning’s Cougar-Falcon Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Facility. The pair remained composed and eventually conquered the competition. Timmer, a junior, won the boys race in 16 minutes, 38 seconds, while Bos, a freshman, won the girls race in 18:39. Marine from St. Clair Co. Killed in Afghanistan CHINA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 23-year-old Marine from St. Clair County described by those who knew him as proud of his service has died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan, the military said Thursday. ... He was a graduate of St. Clair High School, where he excelled as a runner. Clinton Township police spokesman Detective Capt. Richard Maierle knew Standfest since the Marine was a young child and said he was proud to serve.

The Michigan Seniors competed at the Midwest Meet of Champions in Fort Wayne Indiana. Megan Goethals was a double winner in the 1600 and 800 meter events.

Megan Goethals, Rochester MI, recently bullied her way into history, running an amazing solo-3200 in 10:00.15 for US#7 All-Time.  She continued through Two Miles for a US#2 All-Time run of 10:03.2h.  While impressive, her ultimate goal was sub-10, therefore she gets one more chance, the New Balance Nationals.  Read on to learn something you probably didn't know about the nations most humble distance ace...

  Today Nike opened registration and announced details for the Nike Track Nationals competition, the first ever national championship competition to name the best high school track and field program in the United States.

Kendall Baisden, Detroit Country Day MI (Motor City Track Club), will compete in the 200 and 400 at the NSIC meet in NY this weekend.  Could records be in jeopardy?

Now, field events may not always play a big role in some elite meets, but this is an invite that has continually brought in great talent in the field. Pole vault looks to be an area of strength this time around with a couple of 16-footers on the boys’ side and a 12-footer leading the girls. Look for some strong performances in the girls’ long jump and high jump as well. 

Each year, some of the best high school athletes in the nation make their way to the Bluegrass State for the UK High School Invitational and this year is no different. The meet consistently yields some of the best performances in the nation as the oval in the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Fieldhouse is a friendly 290-meters, which means fewer curves in all the races 200 meters and up. Last year, Tavaris Tate (Starkville, MS) and Takeia Pinckney (Columbia, GA) both scored US #1 performances for the entire indoor season, with Tate running 47.06 for 400 meters and Pinckney running 7.33 for 60 meters. In all, there were close to 20 different performances that ranked in the top 10 in the nation for the entire indoor season during last year’s edition, continuing an impressive tradition that keeps the talent level high each year.While the meet has consistently brought in several athletes that were clearly the best in their event nationally (Wayne Davis, Chalonda Goodman, and Jacquelyn Coward to name a few), this year the entries don’t pack so much star power, but there is depth in almost every event that should make for nationally-ranked results in all but a few of the events on the day.

Megan Goethals will enter next weekend's Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships as one of a few strong race favorites coming off her decisive win at the Midwest Regional in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The senior from Rochester High School in Michigan is the top returnee from last year's race with her third place run at Balboa Park in 2008 and is the #1 ranked in the country by MileSplit US with one of the fastest 5K performances in the season with her 16:54 course record breaking performance at Michigan State Meet earlier this month. One of her top competitors will be Foot Locker South regional champion Chelsey Sveinsson of Texas, who Goethals beat out for third place in last year's Foot Locker finals and then took two second place finishes in the mile and two mile at Nike Outdoor Nationals last June. Amber Smith of Collinwood has chosen to become a Wolverine by continuing her education and track and field career at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Smith returns the fastest times in the state in all five distances of the hurdle events, from the 55m-400m hurdles.

Version 5.0 of the Midwest Distance Gala is taking place this weekend on the campus of Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. This year’s version looks to be bigger and better than last year’s version and shows that this meet, which started with just 37 finishers the first year, is growing quickly and the quality of the fields assembled is unbelieveable. This year there are storylines by the dozen and the main one looks to be a match-up that has been building since last cross-country season.

(Photo by Mike Fernandez) The opening meet of the 2009 Ohio High School Track and Field Season opened up with two very impressive performances in the field events.  Senior Erik Kynard (Rogers) recorded a US-leading high jump of 7'2.5", adding to his field house record from last year by an inch. In the Weight Throw, junior Justin Welch (Eastwood) threw the US #2 mark in the 25lbs. Weight Throw with a heave of 70'11.75".

Bob Gourley's weight performance lists is the most comprehensive list of weight throw performances in the country. MileSplit would like to thank Mr. Gourley for his many hours spent tracking down weight results and compiling this amazing performance list. This edition of the Weight Performance List was released on December 30th, 2008. 

Flint Southwestern Academy sophomore Dynasty McGee clocked 57.50, bettering a field full of collegians to win the 400 meters at Grand Valley State.

West Windsor Plainsboro-North continued its meteoric rise in the boys rankings with its win over Don Bosco Prep at the NJ MOC, while the girls from Fort Collins proved they belonged with an impressive win at the NXN Southwest Regional.

With the recent passing of his best friend weighing heavily on his mind, Knoxville West star Matthew Sonnenfeldt persevered to capture the most meaningful of state titles.

The polls are closed here in the East, and at least as far as the MileSplit team rankings are concerned, there are very few changes. The top eight teams on the boys' side, and the top five girls' teams remain intact.

For the first time since its inception over two decades ago, the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association will not sponsor an all-star team of seniors in the Mid-East Regional Championships in mid-November in Ohio.

Coming off back-to-back record-setting perfermances, Kodiak, Alaska senior Trevor Dunbar jumps to the top spot in the West. With a showdown at Mt. SAC looming, the question is: can he stay there?

With most of the top teams taking the week off or breezing through conference or regional meets, there are very few changes in the MileSplit team rankings for this week. The boys rankings are nearly identical, while three girls teams jumped a few spots based on strong performances.

Each week here at MileSplit we will be giving you a quick look at four of the nation's best runners in our new feature called MileSplit Fast Four. Featured this week are Sarah Andrews (TX), Chris Schwartz (CA), Melanie Thompson (NJ) and Andrew Colley (VA).

Several recent big meets, such as Nike South, Manhattan College and the Great American have helped to bring some clarity to the rankings. North Central boys and Fayetteville-Manlius girls hold the top spots.

Ashley Brasovan, Bobby Nicolls, Doug Smith and Jordan Hasay are four of the best cross country runners in the country this fall, and they've each signed up to share their journey throughout the fall in our seasonal feature.
