Alex Comerford Talks Heading To Syracuse And College Goals

One of Michigan's top cross country and distance runners, Alex Comerford recently announced his verbal commitment to attend Syracuse University and compete for the Orange next year.

The Otsego senior is currently ranked fifth in the state (overall) and in a tie for twentieth nation-wide among 2019 grads due to his 15:20.30 clocking at the Cougar Falcon Invitational on September 22nd.

To this point in his stellar season, Comerford has collected six victories in seven starts; he's broken 16 minutes on all but one occasion.

MileSplit had an opportunity to speak with Alex regarding his decision to attend Syracuse and to learn about what he hopes to achieve at the college level.

What made Syracuse University stand out among all of the schools that you considered?

When I took my official visit to Syracuse, as soon as I got there it immediately stood out to me that they were a family.  All of the athletes on the team had a great relationship with each other and with Coach Bell.  I felt like I fit into that culture really well.

What goals are you hoping to accomplish during your collegiate career?

During my collegiate career, my goals are to win an NCAA cross country title as a team.  Outside of that, my goal is to be All-American in cross and track and contribute to championship teams as much as possible.

What, specifically, are you excited about regarding competing at the college level?

I am really looking forward most to being around guys who share common goals with me and guys who I am going to have fun with for the next 4 or 5 years.

What adjustments do you think you'll need to make to ensure that you're competitive with the higher caliber of competition that you'll encounter next year?

I don't think there is going to be a huge adjustment in the way that I do things.  I think I am just going to be around a bunch of other people who want to be really good and guys who push me to be more dedicated every day.  It is just going to be about staying consistent and finding more ways to get a little better everyday.

Are you looking forward to moving up in distance?  How do you feel that racing 8K / 10K will be different from the standard 5K distance that you're accustomed to in high school competition?

I am really looking forward to the jump up to 8K's and 10K's.  I feel like I really get better the longer the distance and I believe my best event is probably going to be the 10K.
